How is your club meeting the "challenge"?

This 4-H year, clubs are being challenged to raise $10 per member to offset the cost of our 4-H program. Fundraisers, grants and donations are some of the routes that club members are choosing to meet their challenge.

The Olympia Pacesetters and Stanford Silver Stars 4-H clubs fees are being sponsored through Allin Township.

Gold Star Clovers have held several fundraisers to raise their program fees.

Ellsworth Tip Toppers have received a donation from Horizon Wind Energy.

So how is your club doing it? Maybe your members are selling candy bars, or your going to have a car wash this summer. Tell your story here! We'll list all of the clubs that achieve the challenge. They will also receive a patch for achieving the goal.

4-H Skating Party full of Fun!

Saturday, Feburary 7th was the 4-H (roller) skating party, over 50 4-Hers, parents and cloverbuds were in attendance. Skaters played the familiar game of limbo, and the 4-H version of 4 corners. Each corner represented one of the leaves on the clover, Head, Heart, Hands and Health.

4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Set!
4-H Day With the Cardinals is set for Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 6:15 p.m. in Busch Stadium. The Redbirds are playing Kansas City that evening, and yes--it is Memorial Weekend! Plan your Memorial Weekend vacation in the St. Louis area. Order forms and additional information are not available yet, however orders will need to be postmarked by April 13, and tickets and T-shirts will be mailed to families on May 11.

The Great 4-H Debate

The Great 4-H Debate is a conference for 4-H'ers from across Illinois who converge in Springfield to debate bills and learn about the legislative process. The Great 4-H Debate is for all high school age U of I Extension 4-H youth development program participants who are interested in learning about how Illinois state government works.

During the two-day event, youth will:

Learn persuasive speaking
Learn how to find information on the legislative process
Develop an understanding of the legislative process
Meet people from other areas of the state

Besides all the work, participants will meet youth from across the state and enjoy games and music on Friday night.

The 2009 Conference will be February 13-14, 2009. Register Online Now!

This conference is open to Illinois 4-H youth. Registration fee for the conference is $60. The deadline for registration is January 23, 2009. Lodging will be at Lake Springfield Christian Academy. Delegates will need to bring bedding, towels, and toiletries in addition to clothing.

Recognition of Excellenc & Club Packets

4-H Club Award packets are available for pick up at the Extension Office. Not all awards are presented during the Recognition of Excellence Ceremony. If you or another leader/parent in your club picked up your Club Award packet you may still have another small envelope with First Year Outstanding Pins for those that did not attend the ceremony. Our office hours are 8-5 Monday – Friday. We will be closed November 27-30.

The Recognition of Excellence Ceremony is coming up on November 9 at 3 pm.

This year it will be at Olympia High School in Stanford, Illinois. The high school has a great auditorium that has just been remodeled. We have 4-Hers that can provide sound and lighting.

The Ceremony will highlight 4-Hers and 4-H clubs' accomplishments throughout the past 4-H year. All 4-Hers, parents, leaders and volunteers are welcome to attend.

Have you been elected to an office in your 4-H club? Are you considering running for an office in your club?

If so, then you'll want to attend the 4-H Officer Training on October 18 at the Workforce Development Center at Heartland Community College. From 9:30 - 11 am you'll learn what it takes to actively participate in a 4-H meeting using parliamentary procedure. You'll also learn the specific duties required for several offices including President/Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Recreation Leader.

4-H Reveals National Science Experiment for 4-H National Youth Science Day.

On October 8, 2008 the 4-H Youth Development Program is launching the first annual 4-H National Youth Science Day to help build America's future science, engineering, and technology workforce. The National Science Experiment, the designated science activity of 4-H National Youth Science Day, will focus on the environment and will use science principles to teach youth across the country about the importance of water conservation.

Are you Wii Fit?

I got a Wii Fit for my birthday. Many youth may not have a Wii Fit as they are hard to find in the US. However, if you have a Wii and are looking for a new activity - consider the Wii Fit.

Trying out the different balance games are really fun! If you have tried a Wii Fit let us know...maybe we can have a workshop at Learn & Fun Day about it!

It would be a great compliment to the Health: Keeping Fit & Healthy 4-H project or Sports Nutrition.

Open Casting Call...Recognition of Excellence

Calling all interested 4-Hers & Adults:

I am in need of 4-Hers, and parents/leaders to assist with the 4-H Recognition of Excellence Ceremony scheduled for November 9. The location has yet to be determined. We are looking for the following: speakers, presenters, greeters, tabloid distributors, tech crew, set up and tear down assistance, and more. If you have 4-Hers or are interested in more information please give me names ASAP.

We will probably set a date to get together in mid-October.

Blood Drive at the McLean County Fair a success!

Just wanted to drop a quick note regarding the successful blood drive at the Interstate Center during the Fair on Friday. We ended up collecting 42 units of life-saving blood, topping last year, which was great! The Hudson 4H Ag Club was tremendous once again in ensuring the success of this event. We would love to participate again next year. The Friday schedule seemed to work well so we would be willing to stick with that again in 2009.

Thanks for including us in the McLean County Fair once again, together we save a lot of lives!

Affordable Fashion Challenge

Stylistics members participated in the Affordable Fashion Challenge. Cameron, Lauren, and Allison Parks all participated. Allison received a $100 cash prize, as well as an interior decorating $100 gift certificate at the City Consignment shop! Lauren won $50 cash, and Cameron won $10 gift cert. to Plato's Closet. All for spending very little on recycled garments!

Linden Lead'em 4-H Club turns 80!

The Linden Lead'em 4-H Club was founded in April of 1928 by Clarence and Mabel Ropp. Clarence Ropp led the club for 40 years. His son Ray has led the club for the last 40 years. An 80th birthday celebration will be held this summer on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at the Grace Church Activity Center at 1311 W. Hovey in Normal.

There will be a potluck lunch at 12:30 pm followed by reminiscing about those "good old days" by former members and present members, displays of past accomplishments and scrapbooks. All present and former Linden Lead'em members and their families are invited to attend as well as any 4-H leaders or members who would like to extend best wishes to the club.

If anyone knows of former members, please inform them of this celebration as correct addresses are not known for everyone.

The Best of All 4-H Club, Art Contest Results

The Best of All 4-H club participated in the Central Illinois Chapter of the Links, Incorporated National Poster Art Contest from February 11 through March 10. The Poster Art Contest is called project Walking Fete, which celebrates walking, physical activity, health, and wellness. The contest is designed for children in grades 1-12. This year's theme is Stepping Out.
There were 10 4-H participants from grades 1-6. The Central Illinois Chapter of the Links awarded certificates of participation to the following 4-H members: Sarrah Walters, Brianna Deal, Akasha Jackson, Keyona Smith, Justice Slayton, Almond Slayton, Amiyla Bonds, Quincy Watts, Antoine Deal, Shaniya Jackson and Jasmine Anderson. The winner was Akasha Jackson, a 6 grader who attends Bloomington Junior High School. She was awarded a first place certificate and a $25.00 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble.
